Why this estimate

    Hour by hour

Forecast in 3-hour blocks from the evening before to the end of school

    All forecast numbers used

This is an estimate, not an official closure notice. Only your school district can close schools. Check its website, app or local news before the morning. How we calculate this.

What are the chances of a snow day tomorrow?

The snow day chance is our estimate that schools in your area close for the whole day. The delay chance is the extra chance that school opens late (often a 2-hour delay) instead of closing. The snow day percentage never goes above 95%, because no forecast is certain.

    0 to 20%
Plan for a normal school day.
    20 to 50%
Possible. Check again late in the evening, when the forecast is fresher.
    50 to 80%
Likely disruption. Watch for your district announcement, usually between 5 and 6:30 am.
    Over 80%
A big storm. A closure is very likely, but still wait for the official word.

How to use the snow day calculator

    1. Type your ZIP code or city, or tap "Use my location".
    2. Pick your school type. Rural districts close more often than city districts, colleges much less.
    3. Choose tomorrow or today. Check again the evening before: that forecast is the most reliable.

What this snow day predictor looks at

Districts mostly ask one question: can buses run safely in the early morning? So the calculator looks at snow overnight and between 4 and 8 am, ice from freezing rain, wind chill before school, strong wind, and National Weather Service winter warnings. Then it adjusts for how used to snow your area is: two inches can close schools in Atlanta, while Buffalo needs far more. See exactly how the snow day prediction is calculated.

    Questions

Is this snow day calculator accurate?

It is as good as the forecast it uses, and forecasts change. The evening before is the best time to check. Every district has its own rules, so treat the percentage as a guide, not a promise. More on accuracy.
